AMERICAN LEGION

CORNER PENNSYLVANIA & CAPITOL STREETS
WHITE OAK BOROUGH
McKEESPORT, PA 15131
NEWSLETTER: - JANUARY - FEBRUARY - MARCH 2003
COMMANDERS MESSAGE: American Legion Post 701 wishes all of you a happy and healthy new year and reminds you to never forget our less fortunate comrades. Please keep them in your hearts and in your prayers.
MEMBERSHIP: We currently have 85% of our membership paid for 2003. Let's support our Commander's goal and aim for 100% plus. We need 239 members to pay their dues for us to obtain our goal. If you haven't already paid your 2003 membership dues, there is no time like the present. A reminder for all members: if you have already paid your dues and you receive a dues notice from National please just disregard, it takes 3 months for member dues to register at National. Also, the dues increase is now in effect. Dues are now $20.00. If you have moved, please make sure you notify the Legion of your change of address.
NOTE: Due to a resignation, a board member position is open and must be filled. Nominations AND Elections for this board position will be held during the February meeting on February 20, 2003.
POST MEETINGS: Post meetings are held the third Thursday of each month, beginning at 8:30 P.M. We would like to see an increase in attendance, so mark the third Thursday on your calendars. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings.
DELEGATES: 33rd District meeting dates are posted on the bulletin board. Start planning now, for the 85th Department Convention being held July 17 - 20th, 2003 at Monroeville. If you are a delegate please let Louise Hoover know by Feb 17th if you will or will not be attending the convention. We do not want to pay for rooms if they are not going to be needed.
TAPS: Those who passed away since our last newsletter: Lloyd Bickerstaff, Ralph Cassol, Frank Hurley, Richard Krieger, Glen Mains, John R Miller, David Miracle, Murice Slater, and William N Taylor Jr. May they rest in peace and be fondly remembered.
AUXILIARY: JAN: Reg. Meeting Tues 1-14-03 at 7:30 (weather permitting). New members will be notified and invited to be initiated at this meeting. To celebrate the initiation of new members and auxiliary birthday we will have a luncheon following the meeting. Card part scheduled for Saturday March 8th all details will be discussed. Tickets will be available from members in January. Any junior or senior members who do not have current dues paid are asked to get the dues in - we're striving for 100% this year. FEB: Reg. Meeting Tues 2-11-03 at 7:30 (weather permitting). Final plans for March 8th card party. Distribution of tickets, and money returned at this meeting. Plans for the Aspinwall Hospital party planned by Louise Loughry for March will be discussed. Departure time will be 5:45 and no later than 6:00pm. We are to be at hospitals between 6:45 and 7:00pm to play bingo, distribute door prizes and pass out ditty bags. MAR: Reg. Meeting Tues 3-11-03 at 7:30. Results of card party and plans for other hospital parties will be discussed. Meeting will finish with Silly Bingo and a luncheon. Please try to attend meetings and helping with our veterans visits.
SENIORS: The Seniors Organization is inviting all Legion members aged 50 and older to join our group. We depend on regular Legion people to fill our ranks. It is a natural succession and your joining and being active will keep the organization vibrant. We have not had any Legion members join us for many years and our membership is dwindling. Your participation is vital. We meet on the 4th Tuesday of every month except July and August. Dues are just $10 a year and entertainment fee (for the band) is $2. We have a nice crowd and enjoy a good time. We have an instillation dinner/dance in March, and a Christmas dinner/dance. If you think the music is not your type, we can accommodate. Call Eugene Heintz at 412-673-5806 concerning membership.
SAL: Applications are now being taken for Sons of the American Legion. Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.M. at our Post Home. Further information can be obtained by contacting Robin Gault or Bryan Hoover. All 2003 dues must be paid by Feb 28th. Member cards can be picked up at the bar.
TOYS FOR TOTS: We wish to thank all the people who donated toys. You helped make some child's Christmas a happy one.
NOTE: All members wishing a key card must see a board member to receive a card. To receive a card, you must have a paid up membership card.
UNPAID MEMBERS: Key cards are being programmed out, 2003 dues will have to be paid to have key cards restored.
